An affirmative thought is exponentially more powerful than a negative thought.
I’ve made a point on this blog to continue talking about positivity and the benefits of having a positive outlook on life. I truly believe that no matter how bad things may seem, there is always something better right around the corner.
After some thinking, I’ve realized a few ways that I use to keep a positive mindset. I’m not going to lie, sometimes it’s extremely difficult to be positive especially if you’re going through a rough time in your life, but you’ll feel better for doing so.
- Squash the worries and negativity in your mind and replace it with positive thoughts and feelings. For example, if you wake up late for work, don’t worry about being late because nothing can change that now, but be happy that you got a few extra minutes of sleep. At first, it may be easier to trick your mind into finding positive results in negative situations.
- Don’t allow your emotions to get the better of you. I was notoriously guilty for letting my emotions take over and ruin my thoughts and feelings and I knew I had to change. Ridding yourself of emotions is one of the hardest things you can do, and I’m not saying to be an apathetic zombie, but to realize that an emotional breakdown won’t help resolve the issue you’re dealing with. In fact, acting emotional will make things worse, so chill out and release yourself of negative thoughts and emotions.
- Distract yourself with a hobby or good music. Getting your mind off the negativity is much better than dwelling on it. Even now, I feel my mind wanting to sink into dark thoughts, but I’m playing some positive and upbeat music to keep me from going there. Listen to your favorite song or get up and do something that you think is fun. My personal therapeutic hobby is photography, which I talked about in a previous post. Maybe you could watch your favorite funny movie to help distract you from things. Or maybe go vacuum your car. Any positive distraction is better than nothing.
I woke up this morning not feeling well and ended up getting to work late. If I was in a negative state of mind, I would have felt upset about my day and worried that I would have gotten in trouble at work for being late. Luckily, I kept in mind that I know it’s not a big deal if someone shows up a few minutes late. The negative feeling was shrugged off and the day went smoothly and even turned out to be an amazing day at work.
Positivity will make your life better. As hard as it may seem, you will thank yourself in the end. Whenever you’re feeling down or feel your thoughts slipping into negativity just grab some headphones, put on your favorite song and do something fun. You will not only feel better, but you’ll be a better person for doing so.
